Create free MP3 ringtones

Create your own ringtones for free from MP3 files with this guide from PhonPhun!

0. Tools of the trade
To create a ringtone from an MP3 file, all you need to do is cutting it to obtain an audio track with suitable length. A free tool to do this is mp3DirectCut (please have a look at the audio resource page to get it).
Of course, your phone has to support MP3 ringtones to use them!

1. Install and run mp3DirectCut
mp3DirectCut installation is straightforward; once completed, use the icon added on the desktop to launch the program.
When the program is run for the first time, it will show the Configuration window open on the Operation tab for language setup: choose your preferred language, and set Mouse selection method to Left = set begin / Right = set end.
If you choose a language other than English (default), you have to restart the program for the changes to take effect.
You can always access this window from the Settings -> Configure... menu.

2. Open an MP3 file
Open the MP3 file from which you whish to obtain your ringtone through the File -> Open... menu, or drag&drop the file from the Explorer window to mp3DirectCut window.

3. Select the interval to cut
Use the horizontal scrollbar and the Play button to find the beginning of the selection to cut. The view section can help you, as it shows the audio levels: low levels correspond to silence, which are useful for the choice of the beginning and the end of the selection.
Use the left button to set the beginning of the selection; to check it, use the =>|.. and |=>.. buttons. If needed, the selection beginning can be fine-tuned editing the Selection text field, or using the arrow buttons in the scroolbar to move frame by frame through the audio stream and clicking the Set begin button once you have found the right position.

The end of the selection can be set in a similar way, using the Play button and the horizzontal scrollbar; it can be set by clicking with the right mouse button, and can be checked using the ..=>| button.

If you make anything wrong, you can use the Edit -> Undo selection change menu.

4. Save
The selection is now highlighted in the view area; to save it in a new MP3 file, choose Save selection... from the File menu, enter a name for the file and save it: now you can send the newly created file to your phone to use it as a ringtone!
